National Honor Society Expectations:

1.The student must be in the sophomore year of school and must have been enrolled for at least one semester at CHCS

2.The student must meet the Scholarship criteria. CHCS scholarship criteria is a 3.0 cumulative GPA. (This GPA does not include electives, is not weighted, and does not include dual credit classes.)  If the student meets this criteria, he/she will be invited to complete a Candidate Form.

3.The student completes a Candidate Form.

  • Leadership expectations:  A student should name three leadership roles at school or in the community achieved since the ninth grade and indicate the roles and the name of the adult who supervised each of these activities on the Candidate Form.  Examples of Leadership include
    • leading in the classroom, at work, or in other school or community activities (including chapel, drama, yearbook, art, choir, orchestra, etc)
    • demonstrating initiative in promoting school activities
    • exercising a positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals and spirit
    • contributing ideas that improve the civic life of the school
    • delegating responsibilities
    • inspiring positive behavior in others
    • demonstrating academic initiative
  • Service expectations:  Service is considered to be those actions undertaken by the student which are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or material compensation.  Sophomores should demonstrate the completion of 15 hours of service undertaken at school or in the community since the start of ninth grade.  Current juniors should demonstrate 20 hours of service. (This does not include service completed for immediate family members.) The student who serves
    • volunteers and provides dependable and well-organized assistance and is willing to make sacrifices to offer assistance
    • works well with others and is willing to take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities
    • enthusiastically renders any requested service to the school
    • participates in activities outside of school (i.e. Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, religious groups)
  • Character expectations:  Students maintain an outstanding record of conduct and behavior with regard to school and community rules, guidelines, and policies, or be able to demonstrate sufficient growth and improvement to compensate for previous inadequacies.  (Faculty members complete a character evaluation form for each candidate.)  Sources for documentation could include
    • administrative records of the school
    • conduct/behavior grades or ratings on report cards or progress reports
    • professional records of faculty members
    • comments based on professional evaluation and actions as they appear on the candidate evaluation form

4.The Faculty Council reviews the Candidate Forms and the Faculty Evaluations.  Then they vote on each candidate.  Candidates must receive a majority vote to be invited to be inducted. The Faculty Council is made up of five faculty members.  

5.The candidate accepts the invitation and is inducted into the National Honor Society at an induction ceremony.
